Understanding and Supporting Your Nervous System

One hour a week, online. A small lesson about what's going on in your body, a practice we do together (with a few options, so you pick what suits you), then we unpack how it went in your week.

Starts
Wednesday 28 October. Six weeks, finishing Wednesday 2 December.
Where
Online. I'm based in southern Adelaide.
Group size
Six people max. This work needs small groups.
Cost
Sliding scale, $25, $35 or $45 a week, you pick. Paid weekly, or $185 upfront until sign-ups close.
Sign up by
Monday 26 October.

Paying takes you to the three prices, further down this page. After you pay there's a short form, so I know a bit about you before we start. Not sure the group's right for you? The taster button takes you to the same form, and you can ask me anything there.

Want to try it first? Free taster, Wednesday 21 October, 7pm (Adelaide time), online. One hour. A small lesson about what's going on in your body, a practice we do together (lying down is welcome), then a chat about how it felt. Grab a taster spot here.

Who it's for

Does any of this sound familiar?

One can look wired. The other can look flat. Both can be nervous system responses, and they may need different support. That's why Base Camp isn't one calming hack for everybody. We start by noticing what state you might be in, then choosing a practice from there.

It's built for people who find most nervous system advice too much, including people with CPTSD, autism or sensory overwhelm, and it's gentle enough to start from wherever you are.

Each week

What happens in a session.

1

A small lesson

About what's going on in your body. A little bit of science, in plain language, so what you notice starts to make sense.

2

A practice together

With a few options, so you pick what suits you. Lying down is welcome. You can make it smaller, change position, or stop.

3

How it went

We unpack how it went in your week. What changed, what didn't, what got in the way. "Nothing" is information too.

After each class you get a recording of the practice and a handout, so you can keep doing it through the week, and catch up if you miss one.

Across the six weeks

Four phases that build on each other.

1

Understanding your own nervous system

What the autonomic nervous system actually does. What freeze, shutdown, hyper- and hypo-arousal feel like from the inside, so you can name the state you're in rather than fight it. A lot of the relief comes early here, because you finally have language.

2

Building your regulation toolkit

Resourcing, orienting, working within your window, titration. Small, safe-enough practices you can do at home to start. Chosen from the ones that are safest for nervous systems that have been through a lot, drawn from Irene Lyon's SBSM (with permission) and Peter Levine's Somatic Experiencing.

3

Taking the practices into the world

Walking with them. In the car park. At the shops. In busier places. This is the bit that matters most, because a practice you can only do lying on your lounge room floor isn't much use at the checkout.

4

Building a life that supports your nervous system

Sleep, food, movement, rhythm. Practical shifts, one at a time (not a twenty-item wellness list you'll feel guilty about by Thursday), that raise your baseline so the hard days cost you less.

I don't set the week by week in stone, so we can move with the group as needed. If you'd like to see it, reach out and I'll send it to you.

What you walk out with

What you'll have that you didn't in week one.

If therapy's next for you, you get there with some ground under your feet. If it isn't, you've still got the tools, and a day-to-day that's on your side.

What people have said

From clients and parents.

"It just centres and calms me."
Shelle
"There's no expectation to be perfect straight away or at all. Just building to better, however that looks."
Mieka
"I can become very anxious trying something new but with Andria's encouragement I was able to achieve more than I thought I could."
Monika
"If something bigger happens or someone upsets him, he'll just do deep breathing and take himself away, where before he'd just lose it."
A parent, about her son

A client I had was spending days recovering from one day at work. She also told me she couldn't do this stuff at work. "Not at work," she said. With me, she experimented with different practices until we found the ones that worked for her, learned about what was going on in her body, and built up her time with the practices, bit by bit. Now she does them at work. She can have a hard day, or a normal day, and spends less time recovering, and she can pause and choose instead of react.

A young person came to me who would literally run away or lash out when things got too much. We tried different practices, simple ones, until we found what worked for them. Now they walk away instead, definitely more often than not!

None of this happened because of one big breakthrough. It's the small practices, done often enough that they were there when they were needed.

How the group runs

Why six, and what if it doesn't fill?

Six is the number where everyone actually gets seen, so that's the number I take. I'm not saying six to make you hurry, it's how many people I can hold properly. Everyone starts and finishes together, so nobody parachutes in halfway, lost.

A group runs once four people have signed up. If it doesn't get there, I'll let you know before it starts, and you can go on the waitlist for the next group.

Cost

The sliding scale.

I always like to make things accessible, and meaningful, so my fees run on three tiers. Pick the one that's honest for you right now: concession if money's tight, the real price if you can, or pay it forward so someone else can have a concession spot. No proof needed.

Weekly payments stop on their own after six weeks, so there's nothing to cancel. If fortnightly suits your pay cycle better, or you'd like to change your payment day, email me at hello@andriarose.com and I'll sort it. Base Camp is private only, it isn't run under the NDIS.

After you pay, you'll get a short form, so I know a bit about you and can keep the group safe for everyone. If it turns out the group isn't the right fit for you right now, you get a full refund and we work out together what is.

Is it right for you right now?

A gentle fit check.

Base Camp is nervous system education and capacity building. It's not therapy, clinical treatment, trauma processing or crisis support.

Every practice is an invitation. You can keep your eyes open, change position, make it smaller, skip it, or stop, and there's no prize for pretending a practice suits you when it doesn't.

If being in a group, even a small online one, feels like it would tip you over right now, one to one might be a gentler place to start. That's part of what the enquiry form helps us work out, for both of us, and why I've done the form this way: for everyone's safety, so I can refer if needed, and so the groups fit the people in them.

If you're in crisis right now, please contact Lifeline on 13 11 14, or call 000 in an emergency.

Questions

The things people ask.

Do I need to know anything about nervous systems?

No. You don't need to be good at meditation, and you don't need to force yourself to close your eyes, sit still or finish a practice that doesn't feel right.

Do I have to come to the free taster first?

No. It's there if you'd like to feel the work in your body before deciding anything.

What if I miss a week?

You'll still get the practice recording and the handout, so you can catch up and come back in the next week.

How does paying work?

Pick your rate in the cost section and pay through Stripe, then fill in the short form that comes up after. Weekly payments come out on the same day each week and stop on their own after six weeks. Or pay $185 upfront for all six weeks, which is only available until sign-ups close on Monday 26 October. Fortnightly is fine too, just email me at hello@andriarose.com. Once you've paid, I'll email you the link to join us online before your first session.

What happens after the six weeks?

You can keep going. I'm starting an ongoing weekly group for people who've done Base Camp, for practice, questions and working things through together. You can also move on to The Expedition, or to one to one. Details on the group are coming soon.

Can I use NDIS funding?

Not for the group. Groups are private only. If you're a self-managed or plan-managed NDIS participant, I do 1:1 nervous system sessions and support work, which can include food and movement.

Any other questions?

Message me on Instagram, or fill in the enquiry form and ask there.

Who's running it

I'm not coming at your nervous system from a textbook I read once.

I've spent more than twenty-five years working with people on the things that don't fit in a neat box: their bodies, their goals, their mental health, their next step. Youth work, community services training and program development, a fitness studio I built and ran for years, and the last few years working directly inside the NDIS.

I've done the work in my own body, and I keep doing it. Complex PTSD and ADHD are part of my own life, not a list of symptoms off a website, so this terrain is familiar from the inside as well as from the training. (I'm not a healed guru. I'm someone still in it, which is exactly why I can sit with you in it.) More about me and my background here.
